Milton Keynes Lightning have announced that Pete Russell has agreed to a stunning return to the club following Tim Wallace's recent departure.

Wallace, a former NHL player, was let go by the Lightning after disappointing results this season, less than a year removed from the team's sensational playoff victory last season.

While long-time Lightning legend and former defenceman, Lewis Christie, had been successfully running the bench, the team have announced that former head coach Pete Russell would be taking the helm again from the 2026-27 campaign.

Russell is a highly respected figure in British hockey, with experience in the Elite League, German DEL and, most notably, with Team Great Britain - with whom he has successfully led into the World Championships on two occasions, rubbing shoulders with some of hockey's elite, including Canada, Sweden and the USA.

Returning in his dual role as head coach and Director of Hockey, Russell is already very familiar with the Lightning after being in charge between 2015 and 2018.

During this time, he led the team to playoff and cup victories in the old EPIHL, as well as runners-up in the league and playoffs.

With the Lightning keen to get back to winning silverware, bringing in such an experienced and well respected person such as Russell is the best possible result.

Speaking of his return, Russell said: "I am thrilled to return to a club that holds such a special place in my heart."

"My time and journey away has provided me with invaluable experiences, many lessons both good and bad, and insights that I am eager to bring back to this team and community."

He added: "This commitment also provides me with the invaluable opportunity to live at home with my family and to once again embark on a new hockey journey together."

"I look forward to working with our players, our staff, fostering our growth, and continuing to build on the strong foundation that has always defined our club."

He concluded: "Together, we will all strive for success and aim to create more memorable moments for our great MKL fans."

MK Lightning Director Tom Roberts spoke: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Pete back to Milton Keynes."

"He knows this club, he knows our fans, and he understands exactly what it takes to build a successful team here."

He added: "Since leaving the UK he has gained tremendous experience coaching internationally and in Germany, and we believe that knowledge and leadership will be hugely valuable as we continue developing the next chapter of MK Lightning."

He concluded: "Pete’s passion for the game and his commitment to developing players makes him the perfect person to lead our team into the 2026/27 season and beyond.”
