Water warning for Milton Keynes revellers

Emergency services issue advice on swimming in rivers and lakes.

Police and the fire service have issued advice ahead of this weekend about the dangers of swimming in open water.

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, which is responsible for the MK area, posted guidance and information about swimming on its Facebook page, which was reposted by Thames Valley Police.

The warnings come in the wake of nine water-related deaths across the UK in the heatwave of last week.

“Making plans for the weekend?” says the Bucks Fire post.

“If you will be near rivers, lakes or the coast, take extra care around open water. Even on hot days, cold water shock can happen suddenly, so please stay cautious.”

The service advises that if you see someone in difficulty:

Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service

Encourage the person to float on their back

    Throw rescue equipment if available

Never enter the water yourself to attempt a rescue

Entering the water could put you at risk from cold water shock and strong currents

Wait for crews to arrive, they have specialist training and equipment
