Red Bull's Max Verstappen held off a strong challenge from both McLaren drivers to claim a fourth consecutive win at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Starting on pole position, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one and created a gap of over two seconds in the early state of the race.

The McLaren's of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri kept close with Verstappen, eating away at his lead before the pit stops began to take shape.

There was a moment between Verstappen and Norris at the pit exit, with the Red Bull driver holding his line on the way out and the eagerness of Norris to make a quick overtake seeing him end up on the grass.

This gave Verstappen an edge for the second phase of the race, with Norris having to chase the rest of the way.

Norris came close, putting himself just over a second behind the four-time World Champion, but he wasn't able to close enough to activate DRS and make a genuine challenge for the lead.

The result sees Red Bull claim the record for wins in the Japanese Grand Prix with eight, while Verstappen closes the gap at the top of the Drivers' Standings to just one point behind Norris.

"It was tough, pushing very hard, especially on the last set. The two McLarens were pushing me very hard, and it was a lot of fun out there, not easy to manage the tyres out there."

"I'm incredibly happy. It started out quite tough this weekend, but we kept improving the car, and today it was in its best form."

He added: "Of course, starting on pole, that really made it possible to win this race."

"It's very important to always try to maximise your performance, and I think we did that very well this weekend."

New teammate Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, struggled to climb the field after starting P14 courtesy of Carlos Sainz's three-place grid penalty.

The 24-year-old Japanese driver finished P12 after getting stuck behind the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso for the final phase of the race.

It's early days for Tsunoda in the Red Bull, however, so finishing higher than he started should be viewed as a positive. The hope will be that over time, he will become more comfortable in the car and start to push towards the points.
