A pianist and composer from Milton Keynes has been tickling the ivories with gusto over the past few months, having set himself a mammoth task.
Dave Hall decided to write and record a completely new piece of piano music every single day for a whole year.
It’s progressing well, too - he reaches the 100 day mark on October 3.
What was the motivation?
“The challenge started after I found myself in a creative slump and realised I was overthinking everything I was writing," he told MKFM's Sammy Jones.
"I decided to stop thinking about it and simply sit at the piano, press record and see what comes out. Every piece is improvised in the moment, with no planning or written music.”
He is ably accompanied by his Border Collie, Skye, who is partial to her master’s playability: “She has been listening to me play piano since she was a puppy and has always sung along.
"She still regularly joins in, which adds an interesting bit of pressure when I’m trying to come up with something new!”
Dave, who works with his hands in his day job as a painter and decorator, was bitten by the music bug at a young age.
“I started playing piano very young after my parents found a local teacher in Milton Keynes, and I worked my way through the grades," he said.
“I was always more interested in writing my own music though, rather than just playing other people’s. Over the last few years I’ve started taking my composing more seriously, and I’ve been lucky enough to have a variety of my tracks released through music libraries."
So far, four of his compositions from this challenge have been released.
“I’m still deciding what I’ll eventually do with the full collection. I’ll probably release more as the challenge develops and see where it takes me…”
