Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats welcome local student for work experience placement to support young people and to encourage participation in local government.

Liberal Democrat councillors on Milton Keynes City Council hosted a Year 12 student from Oakgrove School as part of their work experience placement last week.

Alistair Hancock who is currently studying A-Level Politics, spent the week with the Liberal Democrat Group - the main opposition to Labour on the City Council.

During his placement, Alistair worked alongside Councillor Jane Carr, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, learning more about the day-to-day role of a ward councillor, casework, and the proposed boundary changes ahead of the May 2026 local elections.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit to the Thames Valley Police CCTV suite where Alistair received a behind-the-scenes look at how the team operates to keep Milton Keynes safe.

The visit offered a valuable insight into how Thames Valley Police work alongside Milton Keynes City Council to support public safety across the city.

Councillor Jane Carr, said: “We were delighted to welcome Alistair last week and give him more of an insight into local government. It’s so important to support our young people and strengthen their involvement in democracy. From backing votes at 16, to empowering the Youth Council to speak at meetings, we’re proud to help strengthen young people’s voices across the city.”

Reflecting on his work experience placement, Alistair, added: “Spending time with Liberal Democrat councillors has opened my eyes to the wide range of job opportunities available in local government. It has shown me the immense effort that goes into running Milton Keynes City Council. I’ve really enjoyed learning more about the role of a local councillor and the hard work Lib Dem councillors put into making Milton Keynes a better place to live.”

The Lib Dems have 18 seats on Milton Keynes City Council and are the main opposition to Labour administration. To find your local councillor, please click here.
