Milton Keynes Innovates returns to bridge the STEM skills gap and inspire future innovators

Milton Keynes is once again set to host one of the region’s most dynamic and inspiring events, the MK Innovates STEM Festival, taking place on 21st and 22nd October 2025 at Middleton Hall.

Founded in 2017 by Women Leaders UK, MK Innovates has grown to become a powerful platform for tackling one of the UK’s most pressing challenges: the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills shortage.

The shortfall in STEM talent currently costs the UK economy an estimated £1.5 billion annually, driven by recruitment difficulties, rising wages, and lost productivity. Significantly, women remain notably underrepresented in these critical industries, making up just 13% of the workforce in STEM roles.

This year’s theme, “Connect to Innovate,” reflects the festival’s mission to harness the power of connection to inspire innovation, close the STEM gap, and ensure every young person - regardless of background, gender or circumstance, has the chance to thrive. By uniting educators, businesses, students, and the wider community, MK Innovates aims to empower more girls and women to explore careers in STEM while providing clear pathways and support for anyone looking to develop their skills or transition into these fields.

Dr. Susan Izadkhasti, Trustee of Women Leaders UK and MK Innovates Festival Lead, explains: “MK Innovates was created to encourage more women and girls into STEM, but today it’s about much more than that. We are tackling barriers that prevent people - especially those from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups - from seeing themselves in these industries. This event is a celebration of opportunity, a place where connections are made, and futures are shaped.”

Two Days of Inspiration, Learning, and Opportunity

The festival will bring together over 35 organisations, including Santander, NatWest, Oracle Red Bull Racing, Cranfield University, Thames Valley Police, Tesla, Network Rail, and many more, to showcase the exciting world of STEM through hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and career guidance.

    Day 1 – Adults & Career Changers

The opening day, Tuesday 21st October, focuses on adults looking to start or grow a career in STEM, with particular support for women considering a career change.
    Attendees can:

    • Explore current job opportunities and new technologies.
    • Network with leading companies and industry experts.
    • Access practical workshops on CV writing, interview skills, and career pathways.
    • Meet inspiring female role models working in STEM today.

    Day 2 – Schools & Young People

On Wednesday 22nd October, the festival opens its doors to over 1,000 local students, giving them a hands-on introduction to STEM careers through interactive activities, motivational talks, and direct engagement with industry professionals.

The lack of practical STEM education and limited access to role models has left many young people unaware of the opportunities available to them. This is especially true for girls, underprivileged communities, people with disabilities, and neurodiverse individuals.

Dr. Julie Mills OBE, Chair of Women Leaders UK, adds: “Encouraging a diverse array of people into STEM careers isn’t just a goal; it’s a necessity. Diversity fuels innovation. By opening doors and breaking down barriers, we can unlock the potential of thousands of young minds and create a brighter future for everyone.”

MK Innovates is free to attend, making it accessible for all. Whether you are a student, teacher, career changer, or simply curious about STEM, this festival offers a rare opportunity to explore what’s possible and connect with the people and organisations shaping our future.
