Milton Keynes among the UK’s least congested driving locations

City comes sixth in list of country’s calmer traffic spots.

Milton Keynes is one of the UK’s best cities to drive through when it comes to traffic congestion, a new survey has revealed.

The city ranks sixth in the country for traffic congestion, with just 5.1 days spent in traffic each year and an average traffic index score of 91.5, according to the research from price comparison website Compare the Market.

The findings revealed that British drivers spend an average of 240 hours, or 10 days, a year sitting in traffic.

Researchers analysed and ranked a variety of factors including percentage of residents who commute by car, average days spent in traffic per year, commute time and driver dissatisfaction, to come up with a traffic index score in each area. These were combined to get a final ranking.

“Getting stuck in traffic, especially when you’re running late, can be incredibly frustrating,” said Julie Daniels from Compare the Market car insurance team.

“However, this is a common occurrence for many, as we spend almost 10 days a year stuck in traffic on average. Plus, 17% of drivers admit to experiencing road rage due to slow driving, so it’s important to take steps to help reduce the stress brought on by traffic.

“While standstill traffic can feel tedious, it’s important to stay alert. Keep the music volume down, maintain a safe distance, and resist the urge to reach for your phone. Using a mobile phone while driving – even when stationary – is illegal and could result in a fine of up to £1,000 and six penalty points on your license.”
