Near misses reported on ‘confusing’ road junction.
Local councillors have called on Milton Keynes City Council’s Highways team to investigate after concerns were raised by Newport Pagnell residents about a new traffic light-controlled roundabout and junction near the town.
Since the roundabout opened, drivers have reported confusion about the lane markings and road signs. In particular, the right-hand lane can appear to continue straight ahead rather than clearly indicating a turn towards Newport Pagnell.
Residents have raised concerns about near misses at the major Willen Road junction, where drivers have had to change lanes at short notice after realising they may be in the wrong lane.
Now local Lib Dem councillors have raised these concerns several times directly with Highways officers and pushed for a review of the layout. The roads officers have confirmed that the roundabout has been checked by engineers and has passed several independent road safety audits. And they say the design follows current national guidance for modern roundabouts.
But they noted that older roundabouts across the city use different road markings, which can make newer layouts feel unfamiliar. The councillors say they have challenged the design on behalf of residents and sought assurances on safety.
“We’ve raised residents’ concerns directly and pushed for clear answers,” said Newport Pagnell South Councillor Jane Carr. “Highways have been firm that the layout meets national standards and is safe. We understand some drivers may still find it confusing at first, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
“Residents were right to raise concerns,” added Councillor Tony Oyakhire. “We have pushed Highways for answers and challenged the design, but they have been clear that the roundabout is safe and built to current standards. We will continue listening to residents.”
“We’ve done everything we can to raise these concerns and get a clear response from Highways,” said Councillor Andy Carr. “For now, we would urge drivers to take extra care and allow time to get used to the new layout.”
