Consultation on speed limits ends next week for local comments.
Milton Keynes residents only have until next Thursday to comment on proposals to reduce speed limits on some major city roads.
MK City Council intends to slow down traffic with new 40mph and 50mph speed restrictions along parts of the H4 Dansteed Way, H5 Portway, H7 Chaffron Way and V6 Grafton Street.
It’s part of five wider schemes to improve road safety at specific locations, where there have been a high number of accidents in recent years. Right turn bans and improved signs and road lines are also among the plans.
“Where there is a clear history of accidents, some of which are serious and life changing for the people involved, the highways team will consider and put in place highway interventions to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring as well reducing severity and serious injury should accidents occur,” says the Council in its consultation document.
“These intervention works can include new signing, lining, road layout changes, or speed reductions. Speed reductions are a common intervention, which residents are always consulted on.”
Across the five accident sites with interventions under current consultation, 47 accidents have occurred over the last five years, eight of which were serious or life changing.
Changes to roads like these cost around £50,000 to £80,000 per site but can reach up to £200,000 depending on the scale of layout changes, for example closing a crossover.
“This is good value for money in reducing accidents and severe injuries,” says the Council. “These changes are location specific and are not applied to all grid roads.”
Any comments or objections to the proposals, should be made in writing and sent to the Council’s Traffic Regulation Order Team at Milton Keynes Council, Civic Offices, 1 Saxon Gate East, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3EJ, or by email to: TROteam@milton-keynes.gov.uk quoting reference TRO-474.
The closing date for this consultation is 11th June.
